Rescue Centre

The CANA Rescue Centre is a non-profit orphanage for young girls from the Mukuru slum. It is equipped with a common room, a small kitchen, two large bedrooms with proper beds for the girls and a clean washroom. Two well-trained housekeepers live in the rescue centre to supervise and care for the girls. Under CANA’s care, these girls receive warm meals, safe shelter, proper schooling and medical care.

Before being admitted to the rescue center, the conditions and needs of each girl were thoroughly assessed by CANA’s experienced social workers.  Many of the girls’ parents have died of HIV/AIDS. Others were brought to CANA by their neighbours or teachers who discovered that they were being physically or sexually abused by their parents/ guardians.

When the girls were first brought to CANA, they often seemed withdrawn, anxious and mistrustful of others. CANA’s goal is to help the girls overcome their difficult pasts and develop positive futures. Together with the two experienced housekeepers, CANA’s social workers continue to monitor the conditions of each girl and provide them with ongoing counselling and moral support. To date, 20 girls, ranging from 5 to 15 years old, live in the CANA rescue centre. There, they have a loving, supportive home in which they can reclaim the childhood they deserve.
