Weekly Feeding Program
With a low literacy level and rudimentary education, many residents from the Mukuru slum must work as cheap labourers in the surrounding industries. Most earn less than $1 US a day. Such extreme poverty renders most residents unable to afford basic, nutritious foods. CANA offers a feeding program every Friday that distributes food staples such as rice, beans, cooking oil and maize-flour to the residents who have difficulty providing meals to their families. To discourage excessive dependence upon the program, these residents are assessed by CANA social workers to ensure that they have a need of rations assistance. Once in the program, these residents are closely monitored via home visits to ensure that their needs are being met and that their situations are improving.
