Small Business Initiation Program
![]() |
To encourage Mukuru residents to lead independent, constructive lifestyles, CANA holds workshops that teach how to establish and manage small businesses. Upon completion of the workshops, CANA gives out no-interest loans to help launch these commercial ventures. Over 30 residents have benefited from this program since its conception in 2004. They set up "dukas"(shops) to sell sundry items such as snacks, kerosene and clothes. CANA's social workers work to encourage participants in their economic endeavors and monitor their business progress. Over time, the entrepreneurs repay their loans with the profits generated from their small business. CANA then redistributes the money to other residents who have completed the business workshops and the process is repeated.
