In Mukuru, expectant mothers often have no choice but to give birth in unhygienic shanties that have neither electricity nor running water. As a result, infant mortality rates are high. CANA recognizes this dire situation and has responded by establishing a maternity unit in the health centre. Trained midwives staff the ward and assist in safe, hygienic delivery of infants. Pre and post-natal care are also offered to ensure the well-being of mothers and their newborns. |
