Jambo!
HIV Patients

Welcome to the CANA Family Life webpage.  This informational site is the latest in a series of initiatives to spread awareness of the poverty, famine and high HIV/AIDS rate of Kenyan slums and to raise support for an organization that's doing something about it.

Launched in April 2000 by Mary and Joseph Mambo, CANA provides vital medical services and counseling to hundreds of residents of the poverty-stricken Mukuru slum.  Though originally conceived as a small HIV clinic, they have since developed a full medical centre equipped with a rudimentary laboratory, pharmacy and maternity ward.  As CANA's patient roster grew, so too did its mission.  In 2001, not satisfied with their already remarkable achievement, the Mambos expanded CANA to include a primary school for Mukuru children and an all-girl Rescue Centre for orphans.  The latest addition is a Christian Fellowship that offers spiritual support to a close-knit congregation.

Much of CANA's success may be attributed to the pioneering directors and their dedicated staff.  All personnel are fully trained and board-certified in their field, yet work for a fraction of the pay that others with their credentials receive.  Many work a second job just so they can continue their involvement with a cause they believe in.  They are committed to more than medical aid, but also to providing a beacon of hope in an otherwise bleak setting.

Yet, in a country faced with as many hardships as Kenya and innumerable programs working towards individual solutions, you may question how great an effect a single organization can have.  We've developed this page in hopes of providing you an answer.

Sincerely,
